Party Cakes

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

I can't decide which was my favorite project for the party, the cupcakes or Avery's dress. (We'll get to the dress in the next post.) I made strawberry lemonade cupcakes for the guests. It just sounded refreshing. The cake was my favorite lemon cake recipe from the first Magnolia Bakery cookbook. The strawberry-lemon buttercream was an adapted recipe by Toba Garrett. I piped the butterflies with Wilton's color flow icing based on a design from Peggy Porschen's book, Pretty Party Cakes. Here is the stand in its final glory.Avery's cake was the banana cake recipe from Alisa Strauss' Confetti Cakes book with a cream cheese buttercream frosting. Banana seems to be Avery's favorite food. She loves it plain or mashed in her oatmeal or cottage cheese. I wasn't quite sure how she would respond to the cake, but I shouldn't have been surprised when she tore right into it. Getting Avery to eat has never been a challenge. I eventually had to cut her off.

She enjoyed it so much that I saved a slice in the fridge for her actual birthday on Thursday.

  1. So happy to be directed to your blog when I asked about the party! You young moms amaze me! I always operated under the conviction "it's ok to use a cake mix". It is, but what fun I missed transforming an $8 flea market find and pinning butterfly wings on a baby girl. Guess I am getting a second chance to do so vicariously through all of you. As for the vintage sewing machine, you are sure putting it to wonderful use. I might submit Dorothy or Peggy as possible names because they are women who are dear to me. God bless you as you enjoy your family!

  2. I'm a friend of Pat Brockman (who sent me the link to your blog) and I am just drooling! You are so talented...

I wanted to ask - what kind of camera are you using for those gorgeous close ups of the cupcakes?

  3. Adelle, thank you for your sweet comment. My dear sister-in-law took all of these birthday photos. She is breaking into the world of professional photography. I will try to ask her about the camera.
