The Field Day Green Dress

Wednesday, August 7, 2013

If you don’t sew, then you probably can’t relate to that nervous feeling I get when I cut into a favorite fabric to start a new dress. Seams can usually be ripped out and fixed, but gorgeous fabrics cost money to replace. Normally, I would steer toward a pattern I’ve used plenty of times before, but once I had the vision of this dress in my head I had to press on. And, did I mention it’s one of those Japanese pattern books?!? It was so worth going out on the limb. I am love with it all!

I’m pretty sure Avery is too.

Field Day Dress A

The square neckline and flutter sleeves make this pattern so unique.

Ok, enough of my gushing. Let’s get to the details. The pattern is the cover pattern from Heart Warming Life Series: Onnanoko no Odekake Fuku  by Yuki Araki. The bodice fabric is Dena Fishbein’s Taza collection. The skirt fabric that makes the dress is Josephine Kimberling’s Field Day Green.

Of course, I had to add some trimmings. A couple vintage green buttons for a pop of color on the bodice, and some gorgeous grosgrain ribbon I’ve been saving from one of my trips to Tinsel Trading in NYC.

The back closure is probably the only thing I would change on the dress. It is a simple hook and loop, but one of my green buttons would have worked so much better here.

Field Day Dress Back

I just need to gush a tiny bit more about this fabric. These colors and riot of flowers, bees, butterflies, cherries, and strawberries are just too good. Do yourself a favor and add some Field Day to your stash!
