Disney World here we come!! Actually our trip is not scheduled until September, but I seized the opportunity for vacation outfit preparation. With the bodice style and ruffled tiers, the new Modkid Yvette dress pattern immediately lent itself to an Ariel inspired dress. What little girl does love visions of being The Little Mermaid?
Speaking of bodice, the cinched center complete with bow and bottom ruffle are details not to be missed. Sewing straps and casings is more a matter of good pressing than sewing difficulty.
Light weight fabrics are the best option for this dress style. I used a purple poplin from Mabel Madison for the bodice. I was able to get away with quilting cotton for the skirt portion on the short dress. The out of print Jenny Eliza fabric by Jennifer Paganelli for Joann Fabrics makes me think of water bubbles.
The back is just as pretty as the front. I've used the elastic shirring and bra fittings options, but Patty also provides instructions for tie straps and a standard elastic back in the Yvette dress pattern. This is my first experience with the lingerie fittings, and I am super pleased with the professional look from the rings and slides. Plus, the dress will grow with Tandy as needed!
If you have never attempted shirring with elastic thread, I have a full tutorial over on the Modkid Blog. Stretch those sewing muscles; it might just be easier than you think!
Be sure to check out the Yvette pattern listing. The dress pattern also includes a top and maxi version. I was so tempted to make an Ariel inspired maxi dress, but fabric limits and knowing my daughter would be racing around an amusement park stopped me. The Yvette sewing pattern is also available in teen sizing!! Coupon code EASTER40 get you 40% off your ENTIRE purchase, valid NOW through Easter Sunday at midnight EST.
