Scrap Happy Party Table Cover Tutorial

In case you missed this tutorial over at Ucreate Parties, I've brought it back here. I love this completely customizable table cover to use for any party décor! I first saw this idea at Bumbletees in Memphis, and I knew I would need to make my own.

This Scrap Happy Table Cover is an easy way to customize any table for your party decor! It's also a great way to use up any left over fabric scraps.



Materials needed:
clear vinyl
1” x width of fabric, strips (the number of strips will depend on the size of your table)
hole punch
ruler
scissors

Start with some clear vinyl. I bought mine at Hobby Lobby, and it was sold by the yard. I think you can also buy it in packages at most craft stores.



Lay the clear vinyl out on your table top.



Cut the vinyl roughly 3/4” larger than your table surface. For my cover, I only applied strips to the front face of the table.



Punch holes in the vinyl at 1” intervals making the holes 1/2” from the edge of the vinyl. I used a crop-a-dile for punching these holes.



Fold the 1” strips of fabric in half lengthwise. Push the folded end down through the hole about 1”.



Pull the tails of the strip through the loop created by the folded end of the fabric strip.



GENTLY, tighten the knot.



Repeat.



Trim the fabric ends as needed.



Once your vinyl piece is fitted for your table, you can easily remove and replace fabric strips to coordinate with any event. These table covers can be casual and bright with colorful cottons as shown or get a more sophisticated look with a solid muslin and a burlap underlayer. As an added bonus, you simply wipe the top clean.

A Rainbow Unicorn Party to Remember

Avery’s enthusiasm for this party was infectious. The only thing better than planning and creating a fun party for our favorite four year old, is doing it all for two sweet girls. Riley and Avery (and Todd) all share the same birthday, so it was perfect to celebrate together. The girls ran around holding hands and giggling almost the entire time. Of course, I want to share a bit of our day with you!

It was so nice to have another creative mommy bring all of this together. Riley’s mom, Jessica, made wonderful glittery horn party hats for all of the guests.

These Magic Nuudles made for a fun, nearly mess free craft.

Jessica was also responsible for this beautiful rainbow fruit display.

As well as horns and clouds (bugles and popcorn) for a salty snack. The food labels were made from left over party invitations. Mary Jo of ‘What’s Inside Designs’ did such a great job with the invitations that we had to make the most of them!!

Most of the party décor centered around this mantel and dessert table. Pictures of our girls kept it personal and I scattered in the glittered rainbow unicorns. The most frugal aspect of this party was incorporating the rainbow color scheme by using my fabric scraps. I used fabric scraps for the wreath, number four, garlands, table cover (tutorial coming soon), and even confetti on the table top. The fabric flowers on the wreath and garland were attached with hair clips so they could double as party favors. Gotta love multi-purpose!

I really didn’t get into the theme of this party until I started making the desserts. Somehow everything is cuter in rainbow hues!

Especially jello! I scored these adorable glasses a while back at a garage sale. When they asked if I wanted the brandy sniffers, I think I actually replied that no I wanted the dessert cups. I guess it is just a matter of perspective! Back to the jello, I found the instructions here. Difficult no, time consuming YES. Totally worth it!!

Mason jar cupcakes are definitely the way to go when you want to see these fun layers. When the jars were full, I had plenty of batter left over to make up mini cupcake in every hue. The fun candies came from Target. A great way to dress up glass cake stands is to fill the stems with coordinating colored candy for any party.

Along with the flower hair clips, the guests took home some horn treats. These were candy coated ice cream cones dusted with sanding sugar. (Just in case they needed just a bit more sugar! I think my party invitations may need to come with warning labels!) Just about every detail of this party was inspired by something I found on Pinterest, so if you want to check out all of the sources you can find my unicorn party board here.

The girls were so blessed to share the day with such wonderful friends and family. They are certainly easy to celebrate!

Almost Ready to Party

I’m in the midst of my usual pre-party dessert-making fun, but I thought I would pop in to say hi. Here is a peep at Tandy’s rainbow-ish dress for the day. I used the lovely Ma Cherie pattern from Snazziedrawers. This time I dressed up a plain bodice with fun buttons and a tulle ruffle.



This year’s party has gone from celebrating one birthday girl to two! (At least it isn’t a crazy two-parties-in-one-day event like last year.) The girls are super excited!! I’m working on some jello layers like these, so I better go mix up another layer.

Rainbow Glittered Unicorns

Since about a week after her last birthday party, Avery has talked about having a unicorn party. She doesn’t talk about turning four, just about a unicorn birthday. I can’t even tell you where she got the idea from, but I’m doing my best to oblige. It really isn’t the easiest of themes!

Last month I started a search for unicorns and came up with these. Some are from eBay, some from thrift shops, and one from Goodwill. I did not pay more than $4 for any of them, and most were $2.

I decided they needed something to tie them together since they are all different materials and styles. I’ve opted for a rainbow color scheme, so I decided to create rainbow unicorns. These are the materials I used: glitter, spray adhesive, and Polyurethane clear gloss finish.

Each unicorn took two to three coats of glitter. I would spray a section of the unicorn then dust it with glitter allowing drying time between coats. A final coat of the Poly sealed up the glitter pretty well. None of them are perfect, but I like the feel for a kid’s party.

I kept the tall unicorn from the first photo as is since it was already rainbow colored, and the rocking orange unicorn didn’t make that first photo (in case anyone was wondering about the discrepancy.) The purple unicorn is also a bell. I may see if Avery wants to keep him as a memento, but the rest I think I will try to sell after the party if anyone else happens to need unicorn décor. Project Run & Play Sew Along–Week 6

I’ve officially had the most frustrating week sewing ever. After the high of last week’s outfit, I just crashed. It started with an outfit for Tandy in which I was working as a pattern tester for a designer. Nothing was really working for me. Then over half way through, I tried it on Tandy, and it was just too small. I don’t usually give up in the middle of a project, but this one I did.

With the wind blown out of my sails, I started my Project Run & Play outfit for this week. The finale is supposed to be a design based on your signature style. I was trying to tackle the challenge and Avery’s birthday outfit all in one. As far as how this fits with my signature style, I would say it’s all about the ruffles. I also love to try out new styles and techniques. This outfit is a combination of knit and quilting cotton which are my favorite mediums to work with. I’m not going to say these results are a complete failure, but I was hoping for something a bit better. It just wasn’t my week.

I read about this technique for fabric ribbon dying over on Pinterest, and knew I would end up applying it to clothing. Here are my dip-dyed bias strips ready to lay out to dry. I bought a four pack of fabric paint, so the orange and purple are hand mixed.

I used the petti romper pattern by Snazziedrawers. The rainbow look is meant to go with Avery’s request for a unicorn birthday party this year.

The ruffles ended up a little stiff even though the package of paint ensured it would not be. I’m in love with this rainbow fold over elastic from Fabric Hound. The sequin flower is actually one of Avery’s hair clips I grabbed on the way out the door.

I may not be super thrilled with these results, but I’m beyond excited that I completed each of the Project Run & Play challenge weeks. I tried new things and got creative in new ways. The challenge of completing each outfit, getting it photographed, and then posting for all of you pushed me as well. (Especially this week, since Avery’s Mother’s Morning Out class has ended for the year. Insert sad face here!)
