Sewing Birthday Dress

Avery’s sixth birthday party is a little less than a month away. She is at the age where she gets into her party themes almost as much as I do. For the past two years she has selected a party theme for the next birthday the day after the last one. She refers to her parties by theme not age. Is this normal? To me it’s adorable, and makes planning the details all that much more fun. I certainly didn’t hesitate when she expressed the desire for a sewing birthday party!

Between my vintage sewing tchotchke collection and sewing supplies, the décor for the party should be easy. Trying to come up with activities to entertain 5 and 6 year olds only using plastic needles is proving to be a tad harder. At least I still have some time to figure that one out!

As for the dress, the pattern I used is the dress with square neckline from the Japanese pattern book Happy Homemade Sew Chic Kids. Avery’s age has finally caught up to her dress size, but I’m sure that won’t last for long with this tall girl. The size 6 is a perfect fit.

Cutting the bodice on the bias is a fun twist with a gingham print. This fabric is Mary Jane for Moda, Glamping, Picnic Red. I love the oversized check! While hand sewing is certainly not my thing, I thought it would be a nice detail to highlight the stitches for a sewing party dress.

I’ve got a small collection of vintage children’s sewing machines from various flea markets and thrift stores, but this one is actually my mother’s tiny machine is superb condition. What a treasure!
