Modkid Elizabeth

The development of the Modkid Elizabeth pattern was kick-started by Tandy's need for a Homecoming Princess dress. Patty Young was super gracious to indulge me with this one! Tandy's school runs from pre-K to 12th grade, so the homecoming football game is a school wide event. Tandy was selected by her teachers to represent the elementary school as the Homecoming Princess.

Here she is with her handsome escort. Their primary duties were to appear at the homecoming court introduction at the pep rally and then later to pass the crowns to the elected Homecoming King and Queen at the football game. Sadly, it poured down rain during their prime time moment, but they handled it gracefully and the dress weathered well.

The Modkid Elizabeth pattern is Modkid's first special occasion pattern. Of course, the fabrics and finishes determine just how fancy the dress looks. Our cotton lawn dress is a prime example of a dressed down version. For the homecoming dress, I used matte satin with a lace overlay from Joann Fabric. The pattern includes notes for achieving the lace overlay look.

That sweetheart neckline gets me every time! Tandy was pretty thrilled to keep her sash and tiara. More than a few times, she has put them on to walk around the house.

The Modkid Elizabeth is all about the finishes, from understitching and an invisible zipper, to an optional horsehair braid hem. The horsehair braid hem helps the skirt stand a bit more away from the body for a nice, full look. Again, you can compare the difference with the bias tape hem of the cherry cotton lawn dress

The pleated peplum is also optional.

I will not pass this pattern off as an easy sew, but it is the perfect opportunity to step up your sewing game. After my third invisible zipper, I felt like a pro! The instructions and illustrations walk you through each step. The dress is fully lined, so the finishes are professional and beautiful.

You can catch a glimpse of the horsehair braid at the hem here.

Since the Modkid Elizabeth pattern comes in tween/teen as well as girls sizing, I see us using this pattern for years to come. There is a Modkid Sale going on now, so grab this patterns and any others for 40% off with coupon code MODKIDTURNS10. This code is good until midnight EST on Halloween!

For just a bit more inspiration, this Elizabeth dress in gingham silk was our first sample. The skirt was a bit longer, but it is fun to see the dress in a bold print.
